The Venezuela Solidarity Campaign (VSC) condemns the existence of a secretive Foreign and Commonwealth Office unit planning for the ‘reconstruction’ of the sovereign nation of Venezuela, following the overthrow of the democratically elected government of President Maduro.
Documents obtained through Freedom of Information requests reveal the extent of the government’s commitment to support the ambitions of both the self-declared interim ‘president’ of Venezuela, Juan Guaidó, and the United States to achieve ‘regime change’ in Venezuela and thereby to help British business to profit from the ‘reconstruction’.
Guaidó has been willing through his UK representative, Vanessa Neumann, to discuss a favoured position for British business interests, particularly oil companies, and also reportedly the renunciation of Venezuela’s claim to the disputed Essequibo region. This goes a long way to explain why the British government has been so ready to offer its political support for a minor Venezuelan politician, despite the wealth of evidence that he is mired in illegal and corrupt activities.
The latest revelations in the Washington Post about Guaidó’s involvement in the violent armed attack on Venezuela by hiring foreign mercenaries with the aim of abducting or killing President Maduro throws even more doubt on the ethics and legality of the FCO’s activities.VSC calls for the full release of all the relevant information pertaining to the FCO’s discussions with Guaidó and his representative and a root and branch investigation into this affair.
